A small practice, deliberately.
Oaklane is a design studio in London. We work on identity, digital product, editorial and design systems for organisations that expect to still be here in twenty years.
Most studios describe themselves by what they make. We would rather be described by what we are willing to spend time on: reading the archive before drawing, setting type at the size it will actually be read at, and testing a system against the person who will inherit it rather than the person who commissioned it.
That approach is not fast, and it is not for everyone. It suits organisations with something already worth protecting — a catalogue, a reputation, a body of work — and it suits problems where the answer needs to hold for a decade rather than a season.
We stay small so that the people you meet are the people who do the work. There is no account layer, and there is no version of an Oaklane project where the senior team is not drawing.
- 01
Inherited rather than invented
Almost every problem in graphic design was solved once, well, by someone working with worse tools and better constraints. We would rather inherit that work than pretend to originality.
- 02
Restraint is a decision
Empty space is not absence. It is the most expensive material available to us, and the one clients are most often talked out of.
- 03
Systems over ornament
Anything that cannot be explained to the next designer is decoration. We build rules that hold when we are not there to enforce them.
- 04
Material honesty
A screen is a material with its own grain — light, latency, and text that reflows. We design for what it is rather than imitating paper or pretending to be physical.
- 05
Built to last, not built to trend
We measure our work in decades and take on the maintenance burden that implies. If it will embarrass you in four years, we have not finished.
- 01Brand IdentityMarks, typographic systems, and the written and visual language that holds them together. Built as a system, documented as a manual, handed over whole.
- 02Digital ProductInterfaces for products that expect to be used daily for years. Structure before surface; the surface is then given the same attention.
- 03Editorial & PrintCatalogues, reports, monographs, and the specimen work that surrounds them. Set for paper first, because paper is unforgiving.
- 04Design SystemsTokens, components, and the documentation that keeps a system honest after the founding team has moved on.
- 05Type & LetteringCustom wordmarks, drawn letterforms, and typeface commissioning. Including the kind of drawing that only pays off at one size.
- 06Art DirectionPhotography, motion, and the standards that keep a body of work coherent across the people who will make it.
Survey
Measure before drawing
We read everything first — the archive, the competitors, the analytics, the things people say when they are not being asked. A survey is not a discovery workshop. It is the part where we establish what is actually true, and where the constraints really are.
Drawing
Committed lines, revisable
Direction is set in a small number of complete propositions rather than a wall of options. Each one is drawn far enough to be judged fairly. We would rather show you three finished arguments than twenty sketches.
Proof
Pulled, corrected, pulled again
The work is put under load — set at real sizes, in real contexts, with real content, on real devices. This is the longest stage and the one clients are least prepared for. It is also the one that decides whether the work survives contact with the world.
Delivery
Handed over whole
Files, systems, documentation, and the reasoning behind the decisions. A handover that assumes we will not be in the room the next time something needs to be decided.
- Typefaces
- Switzer and Gambetta by Indian Type Foundry; IBM Plex Mono by IBM. Self-hosted, subset, and served from this origin.
- Wordmark
- Drawn as a single continuous stroke and redrawn on every frame — a skeleton of anchor points smoothed through a spline, deformed by four slow oscillators. Not a font, and not an export.
- Build
- Astro, deployed on Vercel from GitHub. No analytics, no tracking, no third-party requests of any kind.
- Grain
- Fractal noise generated in the browser rather than a bitmap. It costs nothing and it is the difference between a page and a screen.
If any of this sounds like the way you would want to work, write to us.
